Divine! Adding lots of cool stuff to my Etsy Shop!

MINK STOLE. Baltimore, 2009.

EDITH’S SHOPPING BAG POSTCARD.

I grew up in California and as an 80s teenager, I was fascinated with the celebrities created by Andy Warhol and John Waters.  I wrote a fan letter to Edith Massey and she wrote me back a sweet letter on blue stationary with a  picture of Marlene Deitrich on it. She wrote in a very deliberate hand with lots of curly cued letters…sadly I lost the letter in my move from San Francisco to New York, but I do still have this postcard she sent me, signed on the back, “Love, Edie”.

Looking back on the time that has passed, it’s kind of surreal that I have made Baltimore my home now for almost ten years. Like New York and San Francisco, it has become a city that I will always call home.

JOHN WATERS. 2007

Club Charles, Baltimore.

Senator Theatre.

I guess I took this photo about 9 years ago, soon after I moved to Baltimore.

DEEP DARK TROUBLE a new zine I’m working on.

A couple of months ago I was invited to be in a show about Divine, the star of John Waters’ best movies. For various reasons which include living in Baltimore, I wasn’t sure I wanted to do it, but I decided to go ahead because I like the curator, Lawrence Snelly. And I DO love Divine.

I was going to shoot a simple photograph of my friend Zak dressed up as Divine, sitting outside the Drinkery with dog shit smeared around his mouth. The Drinkery is where Divine actually ate the poo at the end of Pink Flamingos.

The photo would be fun and easy, but my mind has been on indie publishing because of the event I put together for Balt Book Fest.  It allowed me the luxury of thinking about zines and self-publishing all day, every day for a few weeks.  In that time, I put one little zine together which was only the third zine I’ve ever made. I’m now working on several…who’s to know which ideas will actually see print…??

In any event, I decided that I would make a zine for this show instead of just taking a photograph. The zine will probably be called DEEP DARK TROUBLE, a graphic 16-pager filled with photographs, collages and things that remind me of Divine…the filthy, extreme Divine that I love so much.

This illustration/collage/Photoshopjob is the first thing I did as a warm up to get the book together. Getting my Divine juices flowing.
